Fintech in 1,000 words

Fintech is still one of the most exciting areas to build and invest in. The profit pool of financial services ($6.5 trillion) rivals that of healthcare ($4.8T) and dwarfs that of ecommerce ($1.9T) and software ($0.9T) — despite financial services companies having some of the lowest NPS scores.

But the "fin" in fintech can be daunting for many founders and operators in the space. There's a steep learning curve in the complex and seemingly esoteric topics behind the systems and technology that move money.

The desire to climb that curve and see more "tech" in financial services led to this project, "Fintech in 1,000 Words". It's a series of notes on important but challenging fintech topics - from interchange and payment facilitation to cross-border payments and stablecoins. These aren't exhaustive guides, but are meant to orient newcomers and give them enough grounding in the basics to continue learning on their own.

It's created by the team at
Matrix, an early-stage VC firm that invests in fintech as well as areas like AI, B2B, infrastructure, healthcare, and frontier tech.
